As they pointed out, they are the first line of any search result and part of the actual links to click on. We already knew this, right? Why did Google decide to inform us again when you’d think that all webmasters, and especially marketers are very aware that a page title is the most important part of SEO?

It’s simple: despite what we should now, many marketers focus on other things and ignore the importance of titles not only in SEO, but in actually getting people to click on the link. It’s a call-to-action, and if its boring, not that interesting and doesn’t engage a user, then perhaps that is the difference between lots of clicks and no clicks whatsoever.

For those that need a refresher, here are a few key tips on Titles

1) For most search engines the maximum length of a title tag is between 60-70 characters and if you are over 70 characters, the title will be cut off.

2) Title Tags should reflect the content of EACH page. Don’t use a boiler plate for every page in your site, actually change the title on each page, to show what is new about that page opposed to the other page. This is really important for SEO, because everyone searches differently and one keyword difference could affect traffic.

3) Don’t overstuff keywords. Besides making sites often unreadable, it’s consider spammy and actually will make users ignore your site. It also will cause high bounce rate, and gain Google’s attention as content spamming.

4) Despite what everyone claims, no need to use your company’s name always in all the titles. If you are trying to get attention of users, sometimes using all the characters and not having a site title is better.

5) Put important keywords in front of the title tag. According to several experts, the closer the keyword is in the front of the title

However, this will be changing very soon. Verizon has accepted a new refund policy that will basically put most PIN submit companies out of business or at least prevent them from using CPA marketing anymore.

Verizon last month instituted a policy in which any mobile content provider that has over 5% refund rate on their products, will receive a 90 day suspension from the Verizon network. If any provider has over 8% refund rate, they will be terminated for 180 days. This basically would put most providers out of business, because it would also include as part of it the inability to bill current customers, meaning that all Verizon customers already signed up would be kicked from the reoccurring billing.

This means all those mobile US ringtone offers will probably disappear very fast. Some providers have already singled that they will continue running the PIN submit offers, but without Verizon. With Verizon having almost 40% of the market share of mobile subscribers in the US, this would make it almost impossible to convert these offers.
Worse is the risk that companies that gamble continue working with Verizon invest in paying a CPAs to affiliates, and then are hit with being kicked off and unable to pay their affiliates.

Already in the last two years we’ve seen three major mobile content PIN companies run into the ground after very public lawsuits and regulators going after them for fraudulent practices. The risk to affiliates and networks seems even more so now. This could be the next “Acai” disaster for the business, where tons of companies continue to allow these offers to be run, only to not get paid potentially millions of dollars when the mobile content providers are suspended and not paid by Verizon.

SEO mistakes that newbies make

<img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-241" title="seo mistakes" src="http://affiliateair.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/seo.jpg" alt="seo mistakes"width="224" height="225" />I do a lot of non-profit work. So much so that my husband thinks I should register my own business as a charity. I work with many single moms and women struggling to get back on their feet or trying to start a new internet business. Their business concepts are sound and their ideas good. I started out just taking a quick look at their sites to give the odd suggestion or tip and then after looking at these sites knew that with just a few seo mistake fixes there would be a big impact on their traffic and ranking. I have limited time so I try and go and fix the seo mistakes they make, that will have the most impact and are usually the easiest to fix. If you want to learn how to avoid the seo mistakes – this article is for you. If you are an experienced SEO professional than this article is not for you. If you are a site owner overwhelmed by the whole concept of SEO or just getting your feet wet and don’t know where to start- then read on- there will probably be a useful tip or two and will teach you how to avoid the seo mistakes.

Below are some SEO mistakes examples

SEO mistakes 1. Bad Title and Meta Tags – the biggest seo mistakes

The number one seo mistake. A good title for your page is in my opinion the single most important factor when it comes to in-page optimization. The title of your page should not just be “name of your company”. You should have a keyword phrase in the title. For example, if you have a site that sells hand made candles and the name of your company is ” Luminosity” Your home page title should NOT be ” Luminosity”, this is a seo mistake that 90% of all sites I see make. Title should contain keyword phrase like “Handmade Candles by Luminocity”. Or better “”Handmade Scented Candles and Natural Soy Candles-Luminocity”. Every page on your site should have unique Meta data (title, description and if you feel like it keywords). Your description should weave in the keyword phrase you used in your title and use less than 80 characters in description. Keywords are virtually meaningless but if you must add them go ahead. If I do use them- I use my top 5 or 6 keywords and I don’t put comma’s in between- I prefer to let search engines figure out the different combos.

Take the time to do this step. If you can only do one thing on this list then do this. This is the most common seo mistake

Seo mistakes 2. Using Graphics Instead of Viewable Text

Many people make this seo mistake. A site this has bulk of its text- embedded into graphics. Having a logo with your name or product description embedded into the graphic instead of using actual text. Spiders and bots cannot “see” images and the words embedded into pictures have no meaning. So have your mission statement embedded into fancy graphic may look great but will not index in any search engine. When using images on your site you should always use ALT tags to describe your image i.e. “blue soy candle” not only for non-sighted users but these are recognized by spiders.

Seo mistakes 3. No Standard Navigational Links

These are the links that are on pretty much every page of your site. You will see them most often at the bottom of a page and it will feature links that say things like “Home” and “Site Map”. More and more I am seeing menus and navigational bars that use java script. These are nice but not crawl-able. Make sure you have things links in html format somewhere on you pages- most will sit these in footer or bottom of the page. This is also a good chance to use keywords. Try “Scented Candles” rather than “Our Products”.

Seo mistakes 4. Large Image Files

Hard to believe- but this still happening. Potential buyers and clients will abandon their site if it takes too long to load. Most people are still using dial-up and can’t wait for multiple and bulky images to download. Some easy tips- make sure you images are set to 72 pixel resolution. Resolution set higher than that it a waste and unnecessarily large. Most photo editors will allow you to set compression rate. Test different compression rates- you can reduce file size by more than half with no visible difference. If you really need the large images then consider using thumbnails that lead to a separate page. (This has added benefit of creating another page and more text that spiders and bots crave).

Seo mistakes 5. Lack of Content

Pages that have little or no text. A photo can always use a description and product can always be more than a name. When you have a bunch of pages that have little or no text sitting on same domain they can look the same to spiders and may get dumped as supplemental results. Go through your site and see if there are opportunities to add content. Elevate your SEO expertise and try using keywords in your copy. There are many excellent articles and resources for keyword research. Don’t do seo mistakes

Consider adding content that has substance and offers related and valuable information to your products or services. Put up a page that describes all your different scents. List your most popular colours and styles. Tell your readers what candles are best for a dinner party and which are the most hypo-allergenic. Get in the habit of creating content for your site. Commit to writing one new page a week or month. Think in terms of building your site wider rather than digging downwards.

Seo mistakes 6. Duplicate Content

Do not cut and paste and pass off other people’s work as your own. It’s not just unethical and illegal- most likely it will be picked up as duplicate content and dumped in supplemental results. This means that the search engines disregard any information on the page and your page may as well not exist. Keep this in mind if you plan on doing something like putting up another site with a different domain and different name and just copy your original web site, you will do a big seo mistakes. I have seen this done by many site owners thinking they have stumbled on the secret weapon to higher rankings. The results can be disastrous. I could write another article on all the bad things that can happen if you do this. Just don’t do it.

Seo mistakes 7 No Back Links

By links I mean other sites linking to you. These are called inbound links or backlinks. I have worked on sites that have been up for months and are not indexed anywhere. Your site has to be linked somewhere- anywhere- on the internet to “exist” otherwise it is just a deserted island. Not having any inbound links is like opening up a flower shop in Antarctica and wondering where all the walk-by traffic is. If you have not done so suggest your site to DMOZ. Seo mistakes that often newbies make is they think that thousands of visitors will flood their new site in minutes. Then look for other relevant directories. Almost every business or service will have niche directories where you can submit your site- most times for free. Visit other sites that are related to your and ask them to link to you. Try and think in terms of traffic and avoid the page rank trap. If a link will bring your site traffic then go for it. Avoid the zero backlinks seo mistakes

You should not make seo mistakes, if you are in a highly competitive market, than I take exception and you should learn how to build quality links or seriously consider hiring some one to do it for you.

Don’t do the SEO mistakes

LONDON — Trading jokes and swapping leads, investigators from the FBI and Scotland Yard spent the conference call strategizing about how to bring down the hacking collective known as Anonymous, responsible for a string of embarrassing attacks across the Internet.

Unfortunately for the cyber sleuths, the hackers were in on the call too – and now so is the rest of the world.

Anonymous published the roughly 15-minute-long recording of the call on the Internet on Friday, gloating in a Twitter message that “the FBI might be curious how we’re able to continuously read their internal comms for some time now.”

The humiliating coup exposed a vulnerability that might have had more serious consequences had someone else been listening in on the line.

“A law enforcement agency using unencrypted, unsecure communications is a major fumble,” said Marcus Carey, who spent years securing communications for the U.S. National Security Agency before joining security-risk assessment firm Rapid7.

“What if this event was talking about some terrorist plot to blow up something and ‘they’ were listening in? It could’ve been much worse if it was related to an al-Qaida plot or something … So this is a lesson learned.”

The leak was one of a slew of Anonymous hacks that hit websites across the United States Friday, including in Boston, where the police site was defaced, and in Salt Lake City, where officials said that personal information of confidential informants and tipsters had been compromised.

Anonymous also claimed credit for defacing the Greek Justice Ministry’s website and stealing a mountain of data from the Virginia-based law firm that defended a U.S. Marine recently convicted for his role in the bloody 2005 raid in Iraq that became known as the Haditha massacre.

The hackers’ successful attempt to spy on the very people charged with tracking them down remained the most dramatic coup of the day, with sensitive police conversations broadcast across the world.

The FBI said the communication “was intended for law enforcement officers only and was illegally obtained,” but added that no FBI systems were breached. It said that “a criminal investigation is under way to identify and hold accountable those responsible.”

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the matter is under investigation, told The Associated Press that authorities were looking at the possibility the message was intercepted from the private email account of one of the dozens of invited participants – who hailed from the U.K., Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Anonymous published just such an email Friday, complete with the date, time and password needed to access the call.

Graham Cluley, an expert with data security company Sophos, said that anyone with that information could have “rung in and silently listened to the call just like Anonymous did.”

In Paris, a French police official who was briefed on the interception said it could prompt international law enforcement bodies to be more circumspect about sharing information in conference calls. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak on the record.

Scotland Yard said there was no immediate evidence their operations were compromised.

Amid jokes about a teenage hacking suspect (who one officer describes as “a bit of an idiot”) and lighthearted banter about McDonald’s, the investigators on the call discussed whether to delay the arrest of two hacking suspects to give the FBI more time to pursue its side of the investigation.

Updates were given on the status of inquiries stretching from Los Angeles and Baltimore to England and Ireland, with one member of Scotland Yard’s central e-crime unit telling the FBI that British police had identified a 15-year-old with possible connections to a recent breach at U.S. videogame company Valve Corp.

“Yeah that’s fantastic,” an FBI official said in response. “We actually do have a pending investigation looking into that compromise.”

An email to the FBI official leading the call was not immediately returned Friday, while the e-crime investigator referred questions to Scotland Yard’s press office. The press office confirmed it had someone on the call but said it would have no further comment.

Most sensitive appears to be discussion of what legal strategy to pursue in the cases of Ryan Cleary and Jake Davis, two British suspects linked to Anonymous. The U.K. police official on the call said prosecutors were secretly going to court to delay procedures in order to give the FBI more time pursue a related case.

When the FBI official thanked his U.K. counterpart for the favor, the Briton said cheerily: “We’re here to help!”

Karen Todner, a lawyer for Cleary, said the recording could be “incredibly sensitive” and warned that such data breaches had the potential to derail the police investigation.

“If they haven’t secured their email it could potentially prejudice the investigation,” she told the AP.

Anonymous, an amorphous collection of Internet enthusiasts, pranksters and activists, has increasingly focused its attention on law enforcement agencies in general and the FBI in particular.

The hackers’ targets have included the Church of Scientology, the music industry and financial companies such as Visa and MasterCard. It has recently expanded to include government, police and military targets.

Dozens of suspected members and supporters have been arrested across the world.

The Keyword Surge project is one of the signature features of Keyword Elite. On the surface, it may seem a little bit simple, but if you dig into its functionality a little bit more, the tool becomes a lot more powerful. I’ve been using it on several of my own projects to generate large long tail keyword lists very quickly. As someone who does a lot of pay per click marketing, this is a huge advantage for my campaigns as I am able to get cheap traffic for keywords that I wouldn’t have been able to come up with myself.

New Keyword Elite 2.0 Keyword Surge Project

To start using the Keyword Surge project, you first need to type in your main keyword. I’ve found that 2-3 word phrases seem to give me the best results. If you go too broad, you will have to filter out a lot of irrelevant results and going too long tail sometimes doesn’t give enough. It really does depend though on the purpose of your keyword list. You also have the choice of where you want Keyword Elite to go out and find your keywords. By default, the program uses what it calls the Keyword Elite Engine. This is a proprietary database of keywords developed for the software itself. You also have the choice of including results from Ask.com, website meta tags, the Google Suggestion Tool, and the free WordTracker keyword database. Ask.com is good for finding more related keywords while the Google suggestion and WordTracker databases are more useful for finding permutations of your keyword.

Keyword Surge Search Results

One thing I really like about Keyword Elite 2.0 is how much faster performing searches are compared to the old version. You can also do multiple searches simultaneously since the software now supports multiple threads. When a Keyword Surge search has finished, you will get back a table of search results which includes the keywords, parent keyword, keyword source and searches per month on Google. One nice feature is that the columns can each be individually filtered. For example, the Keyword column allows you to remove keywords from the results that contain a certain phrase while the Searches/month column allows you to filter out keywords that don’t meet a certain threshold of searches

Usually most people stop at this stage and use just these generated keywords in their projects. However, Keyword Elite has a few other tricks up its sleeve that you might not be aware of that can really explode the amount of keywords that you get. One way is to generate new permutations by adding a word or phrase to the beginning or end of the generated keyword lists. This is quite useful if you are trying to create a keyword list of a localized PPC campaign. Lets say you were trying to promote a car insurance CPA offer. Unless you have some very deep pockets, it is highly unlikely that you can get any ads showing on the first page for regular car insurance related keywords. The competition is just too high which means the bids are astronomical. However, you might be able to compete for long tails like “Palo Alto car insurance” and regional keywords like that. The fact that Keyword Elite can generate keywords like that in seconds is completely awesome.

Another Keyword Surge feature I really like is the Google ABC function. To access this, you select one or more of the keywords on your list and right click to bring up the context menu. Select Google ABC and Keyword Elite will search for the root keyword plus each letter of the alphabet. For example, lets say you perform Google ABC function on the phrase “keyword research”. For “keyword research + s”, you would get back keywords like “keyword research seo”, and “keyword research strategy”. These are additional keywords that weren’t found in the initial search query and you can see that this can quickly explode your list of long tail keywords.

Finally, the last feature I wanted to highlight is the Keyword Grouping feature. You can create as many groups as you want by clicking the green plus icon, and you can add keywords by just dragging and drop them into to the group area. This is a very valuable for when you are working with extremely large lists. You can export groups and delete them very easily as well. If you do PPC on the content network a lot, you know how important it is to great tightly themed ad groups. Using the Keyword Elite grouping features makes this extremely easy to do.

The Keyword surge module is an excellent way to create keyword lists for many different purposes. It is especially useful if you do any PPC marketing where generating large list of keywords is important. I make a lot of money creating CPA Polls and I am finding the Keyword surge project to be an invaluable tool to creating large and relevant keyword lists quickly. Many of these long tail keywords I would have missed with other keyword research tools, and you can really make money on these since the competition is so low. If you own a copy of Keyword Elite, then definitely check out some of the features I mentioned above, and start utilizing the Keyword surge project to its full potential.

When selecting keywords for your search campaign, many of the concepts of SEO keyword selection apply. The biggest difference is that, since we are paying for each click, we need keywords that are very specific and have a high probability of converting.

Develop a Preliminary List

The first step in developing your list is to find a large number of potential keywords that we can peel down through research and testing. Using the Google Keyword Tool as described in the SEO article, enter a few generic terms which would apply to the demographic you want to target with your offer. The Google Keyword Tool will give you a number of keyword ideas to work with.

Scout the Competition
There are two main pieces of information you need to gather during your competition research stage. The first piece is which keywords are currently being used for the offer you are promoting. If the offer is not currently widespread, this may not be important. If, however, you are promoting an offer which many others are promoting, you will want to know which keywords they use.

When checking out others promoting the same offer, you will want to take note of which position your competition is paying for. This will of course affect bid price and should play a part in your total analysis of which keywords you bid on and at what price. The second major type of reconnaissance is the competition for keywords you are interested in using. If the competition is not promoting your offer for a given keyword, this could be an opportunity for you if you think the keyword could be successful. You also want to know the types of offers being promoted for a given keyword. If the offers are similar, this is a good sign as it shows you may be targeting the correct audience. You need to be careful of keywords with heavy competition as the bid price may be
too high for you to bid on that keyword.

Keyword Elite and Google Keyword Tool

As with evaluating keywords in the SEO article, you should perform an analysis of competition vs.
searches. Using the Google Keyword Tool, green bars will show you the number of searches on a
keyword in a given month, as well as the competition for that keyword. Always compare searches to competition level – a word with high searches and low competition offers an opportunity to get your ad shown for a low bid price. Of course, you must always mind how well the keyword is targeted to your audience as I will explore later in this article.

Keyword Elite is a paid tool which offers more detailed research on keywords. I would suggest using a paid tool such as Keyword Elite if you are serious about putting together professional keyword lists. Keyword Elite will show you exact search numbers and competition levels, providing you with much more detailed research. Of course, Google’s free tool still provides enough information to develop a strong keyword list.

Less is More

You DO NOT need an enormous keyword list to be profitable with search marketing. Instead, you need a list of quality words targeted to your audience. It all breaks down to a science – you need keywords that have a higher conversion rate (producing more revenue) than what you spend bidding on the keywords.

A good strategy is to develop a number of small keyword lists with separate sub IDs so that you can track the success. Pay attention to each keyword click-through ratio, as this shows attractive keywords, but you also need to use sub IDs to know how well your keywords are converting. By creating a number of small lists with separate sub IDs, you can easily track how well your keywords are doing, and delete those which are not profitable.

Targeted Keywords

When selecting keywords, always think about the audience you want to target. Think about the
demographic of the users clicking on an ad displayed from each keyword you bid on. Are there multiple reasons why a user would search for that keyword? Would users searching for that keyword be interested in the offer you are promoting?

Focus on keywords that are very specific, as opposed to generic, broad keywords. Broad keywords may show your ad, but will probably not target your audience well. If the broad keywords don’t convert on your offer, you will end up spending a lot of money and making very little. Pick specific keywords and track their conversion rates. Delete keywords which aren’t producing.

Keyword List Mistakes
1. Broad or popular keywords which are not targeted to the audience you know will convert
2. Not researching the competition
3. Targeting keywords with very few searches
4. Failing to test your keyword list and update as necessary

Test, Monitor, ReTest

Using sub IDs, you should always be monitoring the click through ratios and conversion rates. By
breaking down your keyword lists into small groups with sub IDs, you can track performance and make modifications just as you should with your landing page. After you test and monitor, you can delete keywords that are not paying off, and re-test to check performance. Competition and audience taste is always evolving, so testing and modifying is essential to keeping your keyword list profitable.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Search engine optimization is the process of improving traffic volume and quality through higher
search engine rankings. With a little time effort, you can drive traffic to your site from Google,
Yahoo, and other search engines through organic (free) traffic. Although true SEO is an ongoing
process, hitting on the basic SEO principles on your site can result in increased traffic.
Studies have shown that most web users do not look at search engine results past the first three
pages; however, our goal is to get your site onto the first page of the search engines to see results.

This guide is by no means exhaustive, but following the highlighted suggestions can bring in
quality, targeted traffic you would otherwise have to pay Google for on a per-click basis.

Step #1 – Choose the Right Keywords for your Site

Google and other search engines want to return the most relevant web sites to the keywords
entered by their users. If we identify keywords that are very relevant to your website, and “target”
these keywords, we can generate traffic to your website from users who enter these keywords.
Identify your niche

The first step in choosing the correct keywords to target is to identify the niche, or topic, of your
site. It is important to be specific when identifying your niche, as this will help us target the most
relevant keywords for your site. For example, if your website rates and reviews sports cars,
“automobiles”, or even “sports cars” would be too general to identify your niche. Perhaps you
focus on certain models, or perform a specific type of review. If not, you can start with sports cars
as your niche and drill down as you do more research.

Check out the Competition

There are a variety of tools available to research the competition in your niche. The easiest and
cheapest way is to use Google’s Keyword Tool, which can be found at
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. Using the Google tool, you can type in
a keyword related to your niche in the “descriptive keywords” section to see an analysis of a
variety of keywords related to that niche.

After identifying keywords relevant to your niche, you then want to determine which keywords
are the best keywords to target for your site. Look at the “Average Search Volume” bar for a
keyword you believe is a good fit for your site, and compare to the “Advertiser Competition”
column. Although the competition column tells us how competitive paid search is for a specified
keyword, it is still a decent proxy for determining how competitive a keyword is. The idea is to
identify keywords that have more search volume for their respective competition level. For
example, in the screen shot above, “compare sport cars” is a keyword with mild-moderate competition and mild-moderate search volume, which may be a good keyword target for our site.
Unless you have a very popular website, keywords in the moderate range are the best to target to
get results from our SEO efforts. A final note on initial keyword research is that paid tools exist which will give you more specific information. Good tools include Keyword Elite and SEO Elite.

After you have identified target keywords which you feel are attainable, ie, your site’s content is
relevant to that keyword and your site matches the competition level of that keyword, you need
to look at competitor websites for that keyword. Basically, type your target keywords into Google
and see which sites are ranked highly for those keywords. If the web sites that come up seem to
be very popular or more developed than yours, you may want to target other keywords. If
websites come up that you feel your site can beat for that keyword, you have found yourself a
target keyword. It’s good to have 3-5 target keywords that your site is competitive for, and an
additional 1-2 target keywords which may be a bit of a reach right now. Keep in mind this is only
our preliminary research. Once you read the rest of the tutorial and get a better idea of how SEO
works, you can see how well your competitor sites are SEO’d for a keyword to determine if you
can rank higher than them for that keyword. You should now have a list of target keywords you
want to rank highly for in the search engines so we can optimize your site for these target
keywords.

Step #2 – Internal Optimization

Search Engine Optimization has two major components which the search engines rank your site on—internal factors, which is your content, and external factors, which is basically how many
sites link to your site from their site. As far as internal content goes, we want to find ways to
include our target keywords without overstuffing them all over the page. This section focuses on
what you can do to your site to increase your search engine placement.

Keywords in Domain Name and URL

One of the biggest internal factors in Google’s algorithm is the URL of your website. If one of
your target keywords is in your domain name, this will give a huge boost to your search rankings.
Unfortunately, it may be too late to pick the most optimized domain name. We can still
capitalize on the URL by naming pages with keywords, such as www.domain-name.com/target-
keyword.html.

Keywords in Page Title Tag

Do NOT make the title of your home page “Welcome to mydomain.com.” Instead, put a target keyword or two that is relevant to that web page. It’s also good to eliminate unnecessary words, such as “and”. For example, you can replace “and” with “|” to separate words.

For example, “Sports Car Reviews | Test Drives| Car Specs” could be the title of your homepage. Google is placing a value on all of the keywords in your title, so use target keywords which are found on that specific page, and DO NOT water down with useless words like “and”. It’s also important to
note that you should not stuff 10 keywords into your title, as it will both water down the keywords
you are focusing on, and Google may even penalize you for “keyword stuffing”. A good rule of
thumb is to include a MAXIMIUM of 10 TOTAL words in your page titles, and only words that can
also be found in the body of the page. Put a few relevant keywords in your title and you will see a
huge SEO impact.

Keywords in Header Tags

Using header tags is a great way not only to increase your search engine placement, but also to
organize your website. Keep in mind that search engines crawl through your site and so
organization in your coding allows the search engine to better understand how to rank your site.

If you are using a program like Dreamweaver to create your website, it’s very easy to make
headings using the tags, etc. Header tags by default are usually not very aesthetically
pleasing, so use a CSS Style to customize your header tags:
H1 {color: green; font-family: Arial; font-size: 20px }
Header tags are weighed more heavily than regular text on your webpage, so make sure your
headers include target keywords, especially keywords that are used in the content under the
header.

Keywords in Image Names and Alt Tags

Pictures on your website are often overlooked when performing SEO, yet they are a great way to
add keywords to your site without getting penalized for keyword stuffing. Make sure the name of
the image files on each page is named as your target keywords, specifically target keywords that
are in the content of the page.

After re-naming your image files to target keywords, you then need to add keywords to the
tag. The alt tag is the text that is displayed if the image does not load correctly. The html coding
for your image files should look something like this:
”similar

Bold and Italicizing Keywords

Google and other search engines will give weight to words which are bolded or italicized on your
site more so than plain text. Once the content on a page is written, you can go through and bold
or italicize target keywords which appear on the page. DO NOT bold or italicize a target keyword
more than once on each page, or you run the risk of being penalized by Google’s algorithm.

Placing Keywords towards the Top of the Page

Google reads web sites from top-left to bottom right. Although placing keywords closer to the
beginning of where Google is reading can help, it is not as weighed as most of the other internal
webpage techniques. Additionally, if you can start your content before any side navigation bar
you will force Google to read your content first. Don’t spend a lot of time on it, but if you can
shift some of your target keywords closer to the top, it will only help.

Keywords in Anchor Text

Anchor text is the visible, clickable text of hyperlinks. Anchor text is another opportunity to
insert target keywords. Again, we want to use keywords which are relevant to the context on the
page, especially the content immediately surrounding the link. As always, we need to be careful of keyword stuffing, so don’t go through and restrict every link on your page to target keywords.

Navigation links are specifically a good place to put some keywords in because most people just
use the standard navigation titles such as “Home”, “About Us”, etc. Instead, try to include words
which relate better to the content of your page.

This is a good time to point out the fact that search engines CANNOT read text in actual pictures.
This means that if your site is in all flash, you are not going to get any search engine credit for
keywords in those pictures. If you have a lot of pictures on your site, try to include a text version
so you can still gain credit from the search engines.

Include a Site Map

A site map is a great idea to help the users of your website find the pages they are looking for, and they also provide the opportunity to have a page with links loaded with relevant keywords. On
your site map page, make the anchor text of each link the title of the page they link to. Site maps
also help search engines index your page more easily, so they are a must have.

Meta Tags

Meta tags, such as description and keywords are not weighed by many search engines anymore as they are easy to manipulate. Since a few search engines still place a very small amount of weight on them, you can put a few of your relevant, target keywords in meta tags. Spend a very minimal amount of time on these as they are becoming obsolete as far as search engine placement is concerned.

Keyword Density

As you have probably noticed, keywords are the name of the game as far as internal SEO goes.
This is because the goal of all search engines is to give users the most relevant website results to
the search term. In addition to all of the places you have inserted your target keywords so far, you
need to include these keywords in the actual content. You should not only include keywords in
the content, but the content should be about those keywords to keep it relevant.

While including keywords is important, search engines will penalize you for keyword stuffing.
Keyword stuffing is intentionally loading your keywords everywhere you can. You need to be
careful not to overload any of the places we have talked about with keywords. If you do, Google
will penalize you accordingly, which could hurt your SEO efforts more than it is helping.
One way to make sure that you are not overstuffing keywords is to check keyword density.
Keyword density is how frequently (the percentage) a keyword appears in the coding of your
page. There are a variety of keyword density checkers available for free online. One easy tool is
www.keyworddensity.com. With this tool, you just need to enter your web page URL and the
keyword you are checking the density for.

Differing opinion exists on what the ideal keyword density is, but it is a safe bet to keep your density below 10% for any given keyword. Most tools will give you a total density breakdown as well as a density of the various components of your coding, such as title, visible text, tags, etc. Make sure no component is excessive so that the search engines do not penalize you for overstuffing keywords. Staying in the 2-8% range is a good place to be for your target keywords. Keep in mind that if your density is low for your target keywords, you are missing out on an opportunity to add weight to those keywords. Things NOT to Do Now that you know the most important on-page SEO techniques, it is important that you understand some of the things not to do so that search engines do not penalize you. Always be aware of keyword density so that you are not considered to be keyword stuffing. Be sure to stay below 10% with keyword density for your target keywords.

Original content is another thing search engines value highly. You should always add new,
original content to your website. While original content is highly favored, duplicate content can
be harmful to your search rankings. Duplicate content can come in the form of the same exact
content on various pages of your own site. Duplicate content, to a lesser degree, can also come in the form of other web sites sharing the same exact content as yours. While this will not get you banned, it can definitely hurt your search engine placement if you copied material from other
sites and put on your own.

Finally, remember that search engines cannot read flash. Also, you should not use frames on your site unless necessary. Basically, any activity that is intentionally underhanded in an attempt to trick search engines runs the risk of getting your site banned from that search engine. Our goal is to optimize your site so you rank highly for content that is very relevant to a search term.

Step #3 – External Optimization

The goal of all search engines is to provide the most relevant websites for any given search term to better satisfy their users. In the early days of search engines, on-page optimization was all that mattered. During this time, Google came to the marketplace with a revolutionary algorithm—

one that placed a heavy value on how your site is viewed in the internet community by giving
weight to external factors. The basis of Google’s original model, which is now used by virtually
every search engine, is the concept of backlinks. Backlinks are inbound links to your website
found on other websites. For example, if another car review website puts a link to your website
on their website, this gives your website a backlink in the search engines. Backlinks are
considered a vote for the popularity of your website in the eyes of search engines. Since external
factors are not easy to manipulate, search engines give a large weight to backlinks. In fact, the
easiest way to see huge changes in search engine rankings is to have many backlinks from
relevant websites.

Check your Backlinks
There are a variety of tools you can use to check your backlinks. Most major search engines have a function to check. For Google, just type link:yourdomain.com and it will tell you which sites
backlink to yours in Google. Other good tools are www.backlinkwatch.com and www.domain-
pop.com. Using these tools you can check how many backlinks you have, which sites they are
from, and the anchor text used.

Learn About the Competition
It is important not only to keep tabs on the backlinks of your website, but also on those of your
competitors (those sites ranked just higher and just lower than yours). Checking out the
competition can give you an idea of what you need to do to get ranked above your competition.
Researching competitors can also give you ideas of sites you can approach to request a backlink.

Google PageRank
Google gives websites a PageRank, usually from 0-9, which is based on the number of backlinks to your domain. While many people obsess over their PageRank in Google, you need to remember that Google ranks pages, not domains, so PageRank is not an absolute determinant of where you will end up in rankings. What is important is that PageRank is based on backlinks, which is heavily weighted. A site with a high PageRank, such as 7, backlinking to yours is very valuable. The higher the PageRank of your backlinks, the more valuable that link is.

Factors Important to Backlinks

In addition to high PageRank sites linking back, there are other factors important to your
backlinks. The first is the content of the linking website. A backlink with relevant content is
much more valuable than a backlink from a page that has no relation to the topic of your website.
The second important factor is the anchor text (display text) of the link on the page of the website linking back to yours. Another important factor is the number of links on the page of the
referring site. For example, if the backlink site page is filled with links, search engines will not
give your site as much credit as if there were only a few links on the linking page.

Requesting Backlinks

Backlinks can be obtained in many different ways, all of which take time. One way is to simply
email webmasters and request a link be placed on their website. If you have a truly premium site,
some webmasters may do this voluntarily, but most will want you to put a link on your site in
return. The key is to exchange links with websites with high a high PageRank. Requesting links
manually can be very time consuming, so usually should be reserved for sites with high
PageRanks and very relevant content, basically, sites that stand to increase your search engine
ranking a great deal. In addition to manually emailing important potential backlinks, you can use
programs to automatically email lists of relevant sites. The program SEO Elite has a great
function which will automatically search for relevant websites and their contact email, and then
blanket email everyone on the list. This will not give the webmaster you are requesting a link
from the personalization that a manual email will give, but it is a quick way to gain some links.
When providing a return link, do not place more than 20-30 links to other websites on any of your
pages. Instead, create a central linking page which has general topics, and then a subpage that
has outgoing links related to that specific topic. In this way, you are creating a number of
different pages in your web so that no single page of yours has more than 20-30 outgoing links.
Using Article Submissions and Directory Submissions to Gain Backlinks

Aside from requesting backlinks, you can also build backlinks to your site by writing short articles
about a topic or niche related to your website. A simple Google search will reveal a number of
article submission websites. Article submission websites allow users to submit the articles they
write, and if approved, will be listed in their article database. The key here is to put a “resource
box” at the bottom of your article. A resource box basically includes a link back to your website
and some anchor text and keywords to give your link context points.

Through submitting unique articles you write to article submission websites, you gain 1-way
backlinks to your website, which is very valuable in the search engine rankings. The top article
submission sites have a high PageRank, which can make a huge impact on your search ranking if
you write an article that gets included in their database.

Although writing articles takes some time, if you spend a little time every week writing a short
article, you will see a huge SEO improvement. The important thing is to include your resource
box at the bottom so that you get a free 1 way backlink to your website.

In addition to article submissions, backlinks to your website can be gained through directory
submission websites. As with article submission sites, there are many directory sites, which often
specialize in the topic or niche of your website. A quick Google search for something like “your
topic + directory” will give you a list of directories to submit to. It’s important to submit to both
general directories and topic specific directories as they will give relevant and high quality
backlinks.
